After years of anticipation, Thessaloniki’s metro system will officially commence operations on November 30, 2024. The initial 9.8-kilometer line will feature 13 stations, providing a significant boost to public transportation with plans for a daily ridership of 254,000. The system boasts a cutting-edge safety design, operating without drivers, which CEO Carlo Bianco assures has a minimal failure rate. Each trip across the city will take approximately 17 minutes, significantly reducing traffic congestion and CO2 emissions. The expansion into Kalamaria is expected by late 2025.
