Tomiko Itooka, World’s Oldest Person at 116, Passes Away in Japan

Tomiko Itooka, recognized by Guinness World Records as the world’s oldest person, has died at 116 years old in Japan. Known for her love of mountaineering and active lifestyle, Itooka lived in an elder care home in Ashiya. She was born on May 23, 1908, in Osaka, and had been the oldest living person since the death of María Branyas Morera last summer. Following her passing, 116-year-old Inah Canabarro Lucas of Brazil becomes the new titleholder. Japan continues to see a rising number of centenarians, attributed to various health factors.
