WHO to Evaluate Global Health Emergency Status of Mpox
The World Health Organization (WHO) is set to hold an urgent meeting next week to determine if mpox, previously known as monkeypox, remains a global health crisis. This assessment follows an alarming rise in cases across Africa, particularly due to the clade Ib virus strain. As of early November, Africa has reported nearly 47,000 confirmed and suspected cases, including over 1,000 deaths, with the Democratic Republic of the Congo most affected. The WHO previously designated mpox as a public health emergency of international concern in August.
